Why sequence matters
One of the most common mistakes we see in DIY-led renovations across Glasgow and Renfrewshire is doing things in the wrong order — laying flooring before plastering dust has settled, or decorating before electrics are finalised. Getting the sequence right saves money and rework.
The typical order of works
- 1. Strip-out and removal of old fixtures, flooring and fittings
- 2. Structural work, including any wall removal or loft/floor joist repairs
- 3. First-fix electrics and plumbing (wiring and pipework behind walls)
- 4. Plastering and skimming of walls and ceilings
- 5. Second-fix electrics and plumbing (sockets, switches, radiators, taps)
- 6. Flooring installation
- 7. Joinery — skirtings, architraves, doors and fitted units
- 8. Decoration — painting, wallpapering and final finishing touches
Where Johnstone and Paisley homes often differ
In many Johnstone semis and Paisley terraces, loft access or floor void work needs to happen early, since it can affect where new wiring routes run. Planning this before plastering avoids having to chase into freshly finished walls.
Leaving decoration until last
It's tempting to paint early for a quick sense of progress, but dust from joinery and flooring installation will mark fresh paintwork. Decoration is always best left as the final stage once all other trades are finished.
