Choose space-saving fixtures
- Corner or offset shower enclosures instead of a full bath, if a bath isn't essential
- Wall-hung toilets and basins to free up visible floor space
- Compact combi-style units with integrated storage
- Sliding or bi-fold shower doors instead of outward-opening ones
Use light and tile choices wisely
Large-format light tiles, taken up the wall as high as possible, make a small tenement bathroom feel taller and brighter. A single accent tile or feature wall behind the basin can add character without overwhelming a small room. Good lighting — including a well-placed mirror light — makes a real difference in rooms with a single small window, which is common in Paisley's older tenement stock.
Don't overlook ventilation
Small bathrooms with limited natural ventilation are especially prone to condensation and mould. A properly sized extractor fan, ideally on a humidity sensor, is essential in these spaces and is something building control will expect to see on any refit.
Storage that doesn't eat space
Recessed wall niches in the shower, tall mirrored cabinets and slim wall-mounted units all add storage without reducing the usable floor area — important in flats across Paisley, Glasgow and Johnstone where every square foot counts.
