Go for light, handleless units
Pale or gloss-finish cabinetry reflects more light, which matters in tenement kitchens that often only have one window. Handleless doors give a cleaner line and make it easier to move through a narrow galley layout without catching your hip on a handle.
Maximise storage upward
- Full-height wall units up to the cornice rather than leaving a gap above
- Slim pull-out larder units beside the fridge
- Corner carousel units to use awkward corners properly
- Open shelving for everyday items to reduce visual clutter from too many doors
Choose appliances that fit the space
A slimline dishwasher, a combination oven-microwave, or an integrated fridge-freezer can free up significant floor space in a Paisley or Johnstone tenement kitchen without you having to compromise on function.
Flooring and lighting matter more than you'd think
Continuous flooring without a threshold strip visually extends a small room, and layered lighting — under-cabinet strips plus a ceiling fitting — stops a narrow kitchen feeling like a corridor.
